Gram Stain Information:
The Gram Stain process was invented by a Danish physician named Hans Christian. In this process, iodine is applied to cells that have been previously stained with a crystal and violet iodine solution. Next, the shade of the color will change after a decolorizing solution is added. This produces purple iodine- dye complexes in the cytoplasm of the bacteria. The shade the cells inside of the bacteria turn to depends on the permeability of the cell wall. If the cell turns into a purple color then it means that the bacteria you are testing is gram- positive if it turns to a very light purple or pink it means that the bacteria is gram- negative. Leuconostoc mesenteoides are a gram-positive bacteria, this means that the cells in the leuconostoc bacteria are not extremely permeable because it was able to retain the purple color.
